Fired Bill Carmody: NU finishes in 9th place

NU finishes in 9th place

that makes seven times in Bill Carmody's nine seasons that NU has finished in 8th or worse place in the standings. despite Dave Revine's praise of the coach's ability to draw up out-of-bounds plays late in the game, Northwestern twice came up empty in the last twenty seconds when they had a chance to tie.

this L is especially costly, as Northwestern's schedule goes from what could have been Iowa and Illinois to what is now Minnesota and Michigan State. the best that the Wildcats can hope for is a home game or two in the NIT, but even that is not a lock.

Huh?! He has them safely in the NIT, with a 5 seed. Barring a miracle in the B10 tourney, the Cats are NIT bound. Not saying we should be thrilled, but let's not be overdramatic here -- they won't be snubbed.

1) yes, I know they're definitely in the NIT, but i'm saying a home game is not a lock.

2) if you give credit to BC for the 8-10 conference record, don't you also have to give him the blame for 1-17 last year and 2-14 the year before that?

I don't know if you've addressed it before (probably yes), but I wonder who -- besides "Anybody But Carmody" -- would you like to see as the coach?

If the Cats beat Tubby and Izzo this weekend, they'll make the dance.

I've seen a coach take a school like this from rags to riches, and he might be available. His name is mike krzyzewski, and he coaches at Duke university in North or South Caroloina

Yes, I know Krzyzewski won at Duke, but he's not available now. I'm asking who would be a good pick and would actually be available and willing to come to Evanston?

This is carmody's 9th fucking season. Seriously. we suck as badly now as we did when he got here. He was 1-17 in his 8th year. If we give him an extension because he makes one measly NIT i will fly to evanston and picket in from of the AD's office.

His vaunted princeton offense relies on passing the ball 10 feet behind the 3 point line until there are 5 seconds left on the shot clock and then having someone force up a terrible shot.

As an NU alum, I am sick of it, just fucking sick of it. If anyone doesn't think the 9 year carmody error has been a disaster, then they don't know basketball.

and as for who i would hire as a coach over carmody, how about one of evan eschmeyer's stinking turds?

Seriously, who could do a worse job in NINE HORRIBLE YEARS. He's had 2 full recruiting classes. What, is he all of a sudden going to figure it out in year 10?

We need to go to a mid major and hire a winner and let this be the jumping off point for a better job. Look at Keno Davis. He was at some do shit iowa school last year and has ties to the big ten through his dad. now he has a terrible providence team on the bubble.

How about the guy at utah state who has like 20+ wins in 8 consecutive years?

I am convinced we could pluck any coach or inanimate object from anywhere in the US and suck just as badly as we have with carmody.

Enough with stupid gimmicks (1-3-1 defenses, an offense centered around backdoor cuts if by backdoor cuts we mean passing the ball around the half court line for 30 seconds, and cast-offs from the croatian junior leagues).

And the fact we didn't fire carmody for craig robinson is the most embarrassing thing to happen to this program since Dion Lee changed his name to Kenneth. Imagine having an african american coach FROM CHICAGO who is the PRESIDENT'S BROTHER-IN-LAW?????? Honestly, we would have to fight off recruits. Hey high schooler, you could go to michigan and live in the middle of nowhere, or come to NU and be just outside of chicago and if you're really nice you can meet the FUCKING PRESIDENT OF THE US of A. Guess what shcool i am going to? jeesh. We had him on our bench but had no vision to keep him.

Fuck Carmmody and this bullshit already.

two quick notes:

1. i wish i had started this site myself

2. i know there are moronic typos in my two posts above this one, i should be forced to give back my NU degree. Proofreading and venting on a random internet blog do not go hand in hand.

Fuck Carmody.

NU has sucked with EVERY coach they have ever had. And now, that people are EXPECTING the team to make the tournament for the first time EVER in 2010, after arguably the most successful season in 80 years, this is when you fire your coach? After 2008? Fine. Frankly, I'm surprised they didn't. But now? Be serious.

Yeah, five star recruits would be beating down NU's door if they were coached by the President's brother in law. Sure. Go fuck yourself.

Hey douchenozzle,

glad you are happy with mediocrity. It's attitudes like yours that keep us out of the tournament every fucking year. I know every NU coach has sucked, but that doesn't mean we can't find one who doesn't.

Maybe every fucking coach we hire will eat a bag of dick, but i'd certainly like to find out. I am pretty sure of one thing, carmody is not the answer to any question other than "what coach can not take NU to the NCAA tournament?"

So you wanted to fire him last year but not this year? What did he do so much better in year 9 than in year 8??? In 9 fucking years he has not recruited one player to even get a sniff of the NBA other than to try to optimize the concession stands.

Carmody blows, plain and simple. Time to try something else, i mean 9 years is a pretty good indication of what he is going to do with this program.

The Big Ten sucks this year (did you watch the OSU game? OSU is pathetic) and we still couldn't go .500.

When we revert to 3-15 next year, i hope you'll be happy. Enjoy the shot clock violations.

fuck carmody

One more thing assbag. You call this arguably the most successful season in 80 years??? are you fucking kidding me? have you looked at the Big Ten standings??

We finished in 9th place. 9th fucking place. There are 11 teams, not 30. The only teams we finished ahead if were Indiana, who lost their entire starting team and just about all of their scholarship players from last year due to NCAA violations, and Iowa who are a bunch if inbred farmers. If indiana had not been punished, they would have finished ahead of us too.

So in year 9 of the carmody error, in probably the worst year talent wise for the Big Ten, we should have finished 10th.

If nine years ago when we hired that assclown carmody would you have been happy if we said, "we're happy to have carmody, we look forward to missing out on the NIT tournament and ncaa tournament for 8 years and then barely squeaking into the NIT with a 9th place Big Ten finish in year 9."

The guy fucking sucks. I am sorry that you think 9th place in an 11 team conference when one of the teams is on probation is such a great year. Why don't you tell me the drop in the S&P isn't so bad either, i mean it hasn't hit 0.

Mediocre expectations lead to mediocrity. You hear that Jim Phillips? I know you are reading this, so fucking get with it. Enough with this bullshit coach.

the worst year talent-wise in the big ten.

when the conference may get 8 teams in the tournament, which has to at least tie their best ever.

minnesota over louisville.

michigan over duke and ucla.

even NU over florida state.

theres no way you watch games.

Talk to me when the tournament is over.

Did you watch OSU beat us on sunday? OSU had one player who was any good.

And yeah, they are getting 8 teams into the tourney but most are going to be 7-10 seeds. Whoop-de-dam-doo. Color me impressed by a big time conference who dominates the lower seeds of the bracket.

Most RPI wanna be sites have the big ten as the 5th best conference. Not quite as great as you would think.

We finished 9th (and if indiana had not been killed this year, we would have been 10th). Guess where 9th or 10th place leaves you even in the greatest conference ever? The NIT at best.

Sorry, but we suck and the only one to blame is shot clock violation Bill.

What is going to hapen next year when we lose craig moore, the only guy on our team who can shoot a 3 pointer with any kind of consistency? Let's see, say we run 50 offensive plays a game and a whole whopping 2 of them wind up with the backdoor cut working (seriously, that play works less frequently Jimmie Walker, dy-no-mite), so that means we run 48 offensive plays in which we wind up chucking up a 3 with time running out on the shot clock. What hapopens when Craig Moore is not there to bail us out on 15 of those and at least hit the rim.

Enough of this bullshit already. make all the excuses you want. In year 9 we are in 9th place in the big ten, hoping for an NIT bid, with a gimmick offense and gimmick defense that have not ever worked outside of the ivy leagues.

wake me when we fire that assclown.

Tom Brennan was hired at Vermont, which had a history just as futile (albeit on a smaller stage) as NU's, in 1986. His teams didn't do anything until 2001-2002, when they suddenly became dominant. It took a long time, and the school stuck with him. He retired in 2005 as a hero in Vermont.

I'm not saying this will happen with Carmody. Maybe he really is as bad as people here claim. But reputations can turn around in a hurry. What's unusual is that a school would stick with a coach like Carmody for so long; usually, someone with his record would be out after 4 years. There just aren't many examples of coaches who have lasted 7+ years at one place without post-season bids. All I'm pointing out is that one of the few who did, Brennan, suddenly created a big-time winner in Year 16.

I repeat: most successful NU basketball season in modern history. Most wins over ranked opponents, tied for the most ever regular season wins, tied for the most Big Ten wins since 1933, biggest road victory ever, first ever road sweep of the Indiana schools, etc., etc.

Unless you were alive in the early 1930s, you have never seen a better year for NU basketball. If that's still a mediocre season, well, that just tells you how shitty our program is.

Sorry, but firing a coach after the best season in 80 years would be fucking stupid, and Jim Phillips knows that. Carmody saved his ass this year, and he might just have us in the tournament next year. Feel free not to show up to the games, though -- nobody's going to notice another empty seat.

Wow. I think I've found a soul brother here. Or an evil twin. I'm not sure which.

The best season for NU basketball was '82-'83. This team isn't that good.

I also like Robinson, who has led Oregon State to an improvement that is just as impressive as NU's. And I think he'd be a recruiting monster (for the reasons cited) at NU- in suburban Chicago- much more so than he will be in small town Corvallis. Of course, I don't think it was a sure thing last spring that his brother in law would become POTUS. But BHO's chances were looking pretty good twelve months ago, and Robinson would have been an attractive candidate even absent that relation.

Henry Bienen's parting "gift" to NU will be signing Carmody to another long and expensive contract extension, ensuring NU basketball of another half-decade or more of teams that aspire to the NIT.

1983? When they only beat one ranked opponent and their only Big Ten road win came via forfeit? No.

So you don't want to fire carmody because this is supposedly NU's best basketball season ever??? are you fucking kidding me? That's like saying you'd bone a chick with gonorrhea but not herpes because you can't get rid of herpes. Seriously, that is a fucking moronic argument. The bar is so fucking low at NU that having the best season ever is like Hitler telling his funniest joke ever (you get it, hitler wasn't fucking funny and NU sucks at basketball). The bar should not be, oh we won 8 games and finished 9th when we could have finished our usual 10th. No, the bar is we make the ncaa tournament in a coach's first 5 years or we move on with our lives. Done.

And anyway, the Evan Eschmeyer NIT team was better than this group and that team blew dewey william's donkey dick (and i have no idea if dewey williams has a donkey dick, but give me some points for alliteration). I am sorry i set a higher bar for my school than coming in 9th out of 11. If you like mediocrity so much, you should have gone to Wisconsin for your degree.
