Gottlieb likes the 'Cats
so i'm reading Doug Gottlieb's article about the thirty teams who have a chance to make some noise this season (outside of Vitale's previously published top 40 teams), and in the middle of that list is Oregon State. just as i start to get frustrated by statements like "biggest turnaround in college hoops" and "disciplined Princeton system of Craig Robinson" ...I happen to notice which team is listed next. here is what he had to say:
Northwestern. Yes, I wrote it, and I'll write it again -- Northwestern is a potential top-40 team. Granted, Michael "Juice" Thompson and Kevin Coble have to find some shooting help, as Craig Moore graduated. But John Shurna played great for Team USA and is a tough cover, and although the Wildcats' rebounding and interior defense remain problematic, they beat Michigan State and Purdue on the road last season and might have made it to the NCAA tournament for the first time had they not collapsed against Illinois at home. Rising sophomore Kyle Rowley is the key. He needs to use his massive frame to rebound and stay out of foul trouble.
i can't imagine that Bill Carmody is psyched that people actually have EXPECTATIONS about the upcoming season. i guess now we'll find out what he can do with a better than awful roster (although let's be honest, compared to the rest of BCS basketball, NU's talent level is still pretty terrible.)

Yes, John Shurna really did "play great" for team USA as Doug Gottlieb made up in what was either a bad acid trip or most likely a failure to do any research.
Shurna tore up the Under 19 tournament to the tune of 6 points and 4 rebounds per game, so he was just as barely mediocre against guys his age as he was playing against the upper classmen in the Big Ten and NCAA last year.
To be fair, he tore up Egypt for 13 points and 6 rebounds and Iran for 11 points and 10 boards and we all know what bastions of basketball talent those two countries are. If you look at the good teams (croatia, lithuania, Greece, France), shurna averaged 3 points fewer than 3 rebounds.
So basically, his barely mediocre stats were padded in blowouts against the Northwesterns of International play.
Now look, I like Shurna, he seems like a talented kid, but let's not all suck each others dicks over his "great play" (and i'm talking to you gottlieb). He didn't hurt anyone, he didn't get hurt, and he got some practice time, but that's really all you can say about shurna's FIBA experience.
But hey, i hear Kyle Rawley is looking to extend his range to give carshitty the big man shooter he needs to make his princeton no offense work. Rawley has now extended his range from dunking to shooting lay-ups.
Fuck carmody.

AC, you're talking out of your ass. I was in NZ and Shurna was used as a defensive presence in nearly all the games. In fact, his timely blocks and rebounds sealed some victories for Team USA (that's right, jagoff-- Team USA's coaches thought enough of John to have him on the court during crunch time). So please refrain from posting your idiotic musings and see your way back to the kiddie table. Remember, little girls are to be seen and not heard.
