Fired Bill Carmody: Clarifying my position

Clarifying my position

for anyone out there who may question whether i actually prefer to watch NU hoops suffer, let me reassure you that is not the case. i would like nothing more than for us to revamp the program, strike gold with a couple recruits, make the tournament for the first time, become a perennial bubble team, and have my blog put out of business by passionate medill students who are better writers and have more free time than me.

i mean, it's not like i WANT northwestern to lose. it's not like i'm some hypothetical fan watching NU vs. Iowa football in 2005 that becomes so frustrated with NU's poor performance that when they stage a tremendous fourth quarter comeback he can't even enjoy it because he spent the previous three quarters booing and yelling about how bad the Wildcats are. i'm nothing like that guy.

but for the time being, the basketball program is very far from being revamped. so i'll continue to use this space as a vehicle to air my observations and grievances. and from the comments i've been receiving, it is encouraging to know i'm not the only one frustrated by what we're dealing with. (i will also take pride in somehow maintaining my interest level in this blog, unlike those fags over at Knight to Cats. how does it make sense to stop posting once the season starts?)

I did NOT spend the first three quarters booing the cats. I spent the first two quarters drinking in the parking lot. I spent the 3rd quarter and most of the 4th quarter booing the cats and imploring them to go back on the juice (just like in the Barnett days). Then, in an attempt to redeem myself, I spent some time after the game yelling at Iowa fans about taking away their federal farm subsidies.

We're not going to land in the tournament until we start recruiting more basketball players from overseas. If we had shooters from Yugoslavia and any center taller than 6'6" from the U.S.S.R. we could win at least 1 conference game.

But at some point, you have to root for them to start explicitly tanking it so they fire Carmody, right? Remember how much the team outwardly hated Kevin O'Neill in his last season? Then again when your offense revolves around your prized recruit Mr. Iowa, David Newman... It's crazy that he is now the heir successor to Arizona, a legit big-time program. How did he parlayed his non-success at Tennessee, Northwestern and the Raptors into that job?

By the way that farm subsidy razing was some funny stuff.

O'Neill was an assistant at Arizona in the 80s, when Lute was first bringing the program to national prominence. He and Lute are pretty tight.

O'Neill was pretty successful at Marqutee, leading them to a couple of NCAA appearances. I would agree that he did not do much elsewhere.

in response to marc, we're not going to land in the tournament until we start recruiting some decent big 10 caliber players. every recruit we've gotten in the past few years, while somewhat competitive, has glaring weaknesses that are quickly and ruthlessly exposed during big ten play. seriously think about it...

moore - no defense, scared to step inside the arc on offense.

coble - great offensive player, brutal on defense and rebounding.

okresik - short.

michael thompson - short, but man he's quick.

sterling - not aggressive, anywhere.

baran - seriously? did he sign his papers as Vedran Vukusic?

nash - so far has struggled offensively. but he's got potential and good defense.

capocci - to be determined.

the inability of Northwestern's coaching staff to recruit LEGIT big ten talent is the biggest problem. and that doesn't seem to be changing. hire mike montgomery. he's had success at stanford, and some (albeit terrible results) NBA experience.
